Now the question becomes:

Can you show a client—quickly and clearly—why you’re the right person?

It’s something much simpler.

Most people don’t fully understand what the client is really asking for.

So they respond at the surface level.

They read the job description…

…and then they respond to the task.

But clients don’t hire tasks.

They hire outcomes.

The Hidden Layer in Every Job Description

Every job description has two levels:

1. What the client says they want

“Edit my book”
“Write a newsletter”
“Organize my data”

2. What they actually need

• “I want a successful book”
• “I want my audience to stay engaged”
• “I want to stop feeling overwhelmed”

Those are very different things.

And the second layer is what gets you hired.

One Simple Shift

The next time you read a job posting, pause for a moment and ask:

“What result is this client really trying to get?”

That single question changes everything.

Because now you’re not just responding to the task…

You’re responding to the outcome they care about.

Here’s what most people say:

“I can do this job quickly and carefully.”

That’s a claim.

Here’s what a stronger response sounds like:

“I love helping clients create newsletters that keep their audience engaged and looking forward to the next issue…”

Now you’re speaking to the result.

And that’s what the client actually cares about.

Your Experience Becomes More Valuable

When you do this well, something interesting happens.

Your past experience starts to connect naturally.

Instead of saying:

“I have 20 years of experience…”

You begin to say:

“In my experience working with [a similar situation], here’s what tends to work…”

Now your experience feels relevant.

And relevance is what gets attention.

You may already have everything you need to move into higher-value work.
Sometimes the only shift is learning to see what the client really needs.
